"Becker handles the film?s comedy with fluency -- the scenes in which Alex and his friend Denis (Florian Lukas) produce fake TV newscasts are particularly funny -- but he?s even better when it comes to the story?s more wistful dramatic elements. In one of the movie?s most eloquent scenes, Alex?s sister tells him of seeing their father -- who defected to the West when they were young -- where she works. "What did you say?" he asks. "?Enjoy your meal and thank you for choosing Burger King,? " she responds numbly. It may be shocking that some former East Germans believe their country was better off before reunification but, with humor and compassion, "Good Bye, Lenin!" makes those feelings a little bit comprehensible."
